Watcha Gonna Do When A Kancil Comes For You

Once upon a time there was a kancil and his girlfriend (Steph). One day Kancil thought “Why don’t I cook a delicious dinner for my beautiful girlfriend” (Kav).

That night at the bottom of an old tree Kancil and his girlfriend sat down to eat a romantic dinner for two (Ethan). Rebecca looked up at the clear sky and saw the bright full moon (Cath). As Kancil and Rebecca were just about to eat dinner Kancil realized he had left the carafe of water inside, so he went to fetch it (Yasmin).

While Kancil was gone Rebecca heard the cry of howling wolves in the distance (Will). At that same moment Rebecca thought she saw something in the woods. She got up from the table and began to walk towards it (Noah).

As she was walking she noticed a shadow. The shadow stopped (Lachlan). ‘CRACK’, Rebecca had trodden on a branch. The shadow began to approach her (Angus). Rebecca tried to run away, but the shadow followed her (Grant). The shadow started to open its jaws (Nathan). Then a paw slammed down and pinned Rebecca to the ground (Henna).

The mysterious animal dragged Rebecca to it’s cave (Flynn). She let out a mighty scream “Ahhhhhhhh”, and Kancil heard this in the distance (Danny).

Quickly, Kancil ran outside, but could not see Rebecca anywhere (Thea). Kancil saw Rebecca’s tracks in the mud leading into the woods and bravely decided to follow them (Amy).

Kancil slowly followed the tracks that lead into the forest (Luke). After some time, the tracks led Kancil to the opening of a big, dark cave (Tom).

“Help, help”, cried Rebecca (Dimi).

Kancil slowly crept into the cave and saw the scary werewolf (Chantelle). Out of the corner of his eye he spotted Rebecca all tied up (Ruby). Kancil whispered,

“Don’t worry Rebecca, I’ll save you, I’ll save you” (Max).

At that same moment the werewolf’s ears pricked up, he turned around and spotted Kancil (Hannah and Henna).

“Mmmmm….another delicious kancil to feast on” growled Werewolf (Ruby, Brodie and Yasmin).

“No, No” exclaimed Kancil, “Why would you want me or my girlfriend when you could have a big, juicy, plump kancil instead? (Steph).

“Well where is it? asked Werewolf (Ethan).

“The kancil is at my house, I’ll go and get it for you” replied Kancil quickly (Brodie).

So Kancil trotted off back to the old tree and made a big, juicy kancil using their uneaten dinner (Will, Cath and Steph). When Kancil had finished making the ‘fake’ kancil he took it back to the cave and placed it near the lake (Hailey, Nathan and Brodie).

“My dear friend Werewolf, come and taste this kancil near the lake” invited Kancil.

“Why not, I’ll give it a try” agreed Werewolf.

Werewolf leapt at the decoy kancil. ‘SPLASH’ he had fallen into the lake (Flynn). Meanwhile, Kancil snuck into the cave and heroically rescued Rebecca (Noah and Kav).

“Oh thank you my darling, you are my hero!” (Nathan, Noah and Will).

And they walked back home happily ever after.

Kancil Wants to Know

One sunny day Kancil was strolling by a cave (Hannah). He went inside the cave and discovered it was a crystal cave! (Chloe).

“Wow, look at all these crystals” (Varsha). Kancil heard a voice; it was Komoda Dragon’s (Tarquin). He didn’t have much time to find a hiding spot so he hid behind a glacier (Tarquin).

“No one else will find this, it is all mine” sniggered Komoda Dragon (Ashtuthi). “I hope no one is spying on me so I can hide it somewhere safe” Charlie.

“I wonder what he is hiding, maybe it is something sparkly” Kancil thought (Jayden).

Kancil poked his head around the corner to see if he could see anything (Olivia). “Wow, that’s really pretty. I wonder if I could try and get it for myself” (Dahlia).

Kancil quietly trotted down to the nearby river (Lachlan). He yelled out “Komodo Dragon, I’ve found something shiny!” (Renee).

“Who said that?” wondered Komodo Dragon (Max).

Komoda Dragon flew down to the river as fast as he could (Ardiya). Meanwhile, Kancil snuck back into the crystal cave and took his sapphire (Michelle).

At the river, Komodo Dragon looked everywhere, up and down he searched; but he could not find anything shiny (Shannon). He burst into tears and sulked back home to his cave (Cooper and Aaliyah).

At the cave he saw Kancil taking his sapphire (Deegan and Nick).

“Ha ha ha, you’ve been tricked Komoda Dragon!” (Shania).

Komodo Dragon got very angry (Nethma). But it was too late; Kancil had the sapphire (Erynn)!

Kancil ran home with the shiny sapphire and said “Finally I have what Komodo Dragon was hiding” (Josh and Jacob).

Dumb Goat, Smart Kancil

Once upon a time there was a kancil and a goat (Sasha). One day they were trying to find food on a farm (Damien). “I’m hungry”, said Kancil.

“Me too”, agreed Goat (Shehara).

“How about we go and look inside that barn”, suggested Kancil (Nick). So off they went into the barn (Sam).

“Hey, over here, I found something”, yelled Goat excitedly (Kostya). “I wonder what this rusty piece of junk is? he thought out loud (Abbey).

“Okay, okay, I’m coming”, replied Kancil (Ewan). They both took one look at the piece of junk and then gave each other a confused look (Sasha).

“Well….let’s see what this button does?” (Billy). As Goat walked towards the button he tripped over Kancil’s leg…..”OOPS” (Jeremy). ‘Thwack” went Goat’s chin on the button (Cayleb). Suddenly a buzzing noise started (Cayleb).

“10, 9, 8, 7, 6…..”, the machine was counting down (Kyla).

Suddenly the door closed behind them (Nick). “Prepare for blast off”, buzzed the machine (Ash). A big bright light appeared and the machine started to move and shake (Lily and Erin). Before they knew it the machine had taken them back to the ‘Dino Age’ (Billy).

“Whoa! Where are we?” asked Goat (Pat).

“I don’t know what just happened, but I think we need to try and get back to the farm”, said Kancil (Ewan).

“That is not possible, look what I’m holding in my hand. I think it is a piece of the machine”, mumbled Goat (Nick).

“Let’s go for a walk”, suggested Kancil (Harrison).

“Okay” replied Goat (Daniel). So they went for a walk (Shinae). Along the way they saw a rock (Bailey). “I’m tired, let’s have a rest on this big rock”, yawned Goat (Shinae).

“Nah, I don’t want to sit down, but you can”, replied Kancil (Ash). So Goat went and sat on the rock (Kodi).

Suddenly the rock started to move (Grace). “RUUUUNNNN!!!” yelled Kancil (Kyla). Goat jumped up and ran away from the moving rock (Gemma). This was no ordinary rock; it was a dinosaur (Billy and Shehara). T-Rex opened his eyes, stood up and began to chase Goat (Abbey).

Kancil waved his arms and called out “Hey, over here (Kooper). Have you had a bath lately?” asked Kancil (Molly and Bailey).

T-Rex stopped and thought about the question, “Hmmm….now that you mention it, I haven’t had one in years” (Miss Vine).

Kancil pointed into the distance, “There is a nice hot bath on the top of that black mountain” (Kostya). T-Rex looked up at the black mountain and started to stomp towards it (Ewan). When he got to the top he saw a nice warm, orange bath (Shinae). So he jumped into the bath and started to melt (Jeremy). As it turns out the hot bath was actually a volcano with bubbling lava (Ash).

“Okay…now I think we should go and repair the thingamajig that brought us here” sighed Kancil to Goat (Ewan).

In Weeks 4 and 5 the Year 3 students continued listening to the story ‘Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes’ by Eleanor Coerr. Sadako was given a kimono from her mother with a cherry blossom print towards the end of the story. I showed the children images of cherry blossom trees in Japan and explained their significance to the Japanese people.

In Week 4, the students were given an A3 piece of card (sliced in half length ways). They used a drinking straw and black ink to create the ‘branches’ of their cherry blossom tree. The following week the children used tissue paper squares and glue to create the ‘blossoms’ on their tree. Lastly, they attached two pieces of dowel rod to each end of their artwork to create a ‘scroll’ effect.

All the boys and girls really enjoyed this activity and were very proud of their artwork!

Haiku poems consist of 3 lines. The first and last lines of a Haiku have 5 syllables and the middle line has 7 syllables. The lines rarely rhyme. They are traditionally written about animals and the seasons.

To showcase our wonderful new library the school held a ‘Scholastic Book Fair’ on Tuesday 28th February – Thursday 1st March 2012! Our Scholastic Book Fair was a huge success! Thank you to all the parents, students and teachers who supported this event; because of all of you we sold $7,200 worth of books and stationary items. This means that $2,500 worth of new books will be purchased for our library; and all the boys and girls will be able to enjoy these.

“The first day of our fair was very reminiscent of the Myer Boxing Day Sales. As I was teaching my last class for the day I began to notice many enthusiastic parents congregating outside the library; this was my first inkling that our fair was going to be one of success. After two and half hours we had sold $3700 in books and variety items! Wow!”

The winning students who entered the competitions were:

Regan – Prep K

Lilly – 1J

Meg – 2FR

Shinae – 3M

Stephanie – 4Y

Kayla – 6P

Imagin – 6W

These students all received a $10 voucher to spend at our fair!

I would like to recognize the amazing support and help from Denise Aurisch, Jodie Norton and the specialist team. Without them the school could not have achieved such a fantastic result.
