BOOK CHARACTER DRESS UP DAY
To celebrate Book Week (20th-26th August) and Literacy Week (29th August-4th September) we are having a dress-up day. On Friday 2nd September 2011 all the students at Berwick Lodge Primary School are invited to come to school dressed as their favourite book character.
Students are asked to bring a gold coin to help raise money for our 2 Asian schools in Cambodia and Laos. At the moment these children only have one A5 notebook to record all their learning for the whole year. It would be nice to think we could provide them with some much-needed books.
Weather permitting, a whole school buddy lunch will take place on the basketball courts to showcase everyone’s effort. There will be a ‘Smiggle’ prize awarded to the best-dressed student in each grade!
Happy costume designing, Miss Sarah Vine

The Great Dog Bottom Swap
By Peter Bently and Mei Matsuoka
The book is about Dogs. Dog’s hang their bottoms up and all dance. Two dogs fell on the fire and so the whole hall got on fire.
They all grabbed their bottoms but they didn’t know whose they were because they were in a hurry. They got in their cars and drove away.
Now they (dogs) sniff bottoms to see if they can find their own.
I think everyone would like this book – we all did in prep C.
I loved it because it was really funny!

Title: Zac Power Test Drive – Zac’s Wild Rescue
Author: H.I. Larry
Review:
This story is about Zac testing out Pit Stink Bomb and Exo-Skeleton Suit on a mission at the zoo. They were two of his brother’s (Leon) inventions.
The evil group (BIG) opened the gates in the zoo and all the animals went crazy! The people were frightened as the animals were chasing after them… …
It is suitable for children aged between 7-10 years old.
I think the story was mysterious, fantastic, exciting, fun and awesome! I really enjoyed reading the story. I strongly recommend everyone to read this book.
The Lord Of The Rings: The Two Towers
Written by J.R.R. Tolkien
This adventurous book tells the continuation of the nail biting Lord Of The Rings: Fellowship of the Ring. Sam and Frodo travel closer to Mordor, only to find they’re not alone. Gollum, an obsessive crazy creature who thirsts for his (precious) has been following Frodo and Sam to try and reclaim the ring. They capture Gollum and he promises to be their guide and show them the way to Mordor.
Merry and Pippin escape from the Orks and land in Fangorn Forest, where they meet Treebeard, a walking, talking tree. Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli discover Gandalf is alive, and travel with him to Rohan, where they all become allies with King Theoden, and meet lots of interesting characters.
I would recommend this book for mature people, (preferably 10 or over) or anyone who loves going on a wild ride and never turning back.
This book is the best of the century. J.R.R. Tolkien is a mastermind and The Lord Of The Rings will blow you away at every page.

Then his mum forgot the blueberry pie so she went home to get it and Eddy heard the bear and he said, where can I hide so he went to hide in the picnic basket. The bear came out and he ate all the food and then said, what’s for dessert and it was Eddy.

I have read a book but I despise its name, I would rather want to call it an adventure. It is a book about two twin’s, Mr. Huk-Tuk and Mrs. Huk-Tuk. While Mr. Huk-Tuk was busy digging in the farm area he found an old pot. He called his wife and she seemed amused. They took it home and washed it. When Mrs. Huk-Tuk accidently dropped her hairpin in the pot it doubled and was the prettiest thing she’d ever seen. Then Mr. Huk-Tuk said “Quick wife fetch you’re purse and throw it in the pot.” So she did and this time the money tripled! Mrs. Huk-Tuk threw in one coin and out came two pots filles with coins. Then they threw in some clothes and rugs. Then they asked each other “What else do we need?” They started to fight and Mrs. Huk-Tuk fell in. Mr. Huk-Tuk tried to pull her out, and out came two Mrs. Huk-Tuk’s. They started arguing about who was Mrs. Huk Tuk. So Mr. Huk-Tuk went into the pot and made two of himself. Over the years they kept the pot in the corner unused and told no one. You must borrow this brilliant book at Berwick Lodge .

Stormbreaker
Author: Anthony Horowitz
When you hear someone knocking on your door at three in the morning, it’s never good news. When 14 year old Alex Rider’s uncle has been killed, he is left with nothing but his housekeeper.
He tries to find answers and learns that his uncle is part of the secret organisation called M16. He then decides to join, but all the unexpected is about to happen.
This is a fast-paced action book that is suitable for grade 5 or over because there is some violence in it.
I thought this was an excellent book and probably my favourite. I highly reccomend to read this book.
Title: The Throne of Fire
Series: The Kane Chronicles
Author: Rick Riordan
This book is a story of adventure, courage, chaos and magic camels. It’s about two young teenagers who are on a quest to save the world from eternal chaos (for the second time). Their names are Carter and Sadie Kane and they have just stopped the Egyptian god of evil, Set, from destroying the world in a giant storm. But now they must embark on a new and dangerous quest to find Ra, the Egyptian god of the sun, and ruler of the gods. To do this, they must travel into the Duat, the Egyptian version of the underworld. They must trust each other with their lives, or they may well lose them.
This is an invigorating book for people who enjoy stories of adventure, myths and legends. This is one of the best books I’ve ever read. I’d give it nine out of ten and recommend it to everyone who can read.

The Snow Country Prince
Written by Daisaku Ikeda
Illustrated by Brian Wildsmith
The Snow Country Prince is about two young children named Mariko (girl) and Kazuo. These two young children always dread the coming of winter, because this means that their dad leaves and doesn’t return till spring (but to them this seems to take a lifetime). But this time things take a change for the better, after their dad leaves the children and their grandma take a walk down to the bank. While they are there they see some swans foraging for around in the reeds and they have pity for them because it is so cold, which means that it is harder to find food. The children then feed them some bread crumbs hoping this will stop them from dying. That night while they were lying in their beds a “prince” (the snow prince) appeared in their windows. He had come to thank them for being so gracious to the swans in a hard time like this. From then on the children worked extra hard to look after the swans. But one day they found an injured swan, the swan had been attacked by some wolves and it was struggling for life. The children took this swan and cared for him, making sure that he would not die. The children were so proud of themselves, soon from the children being so happy everyone around them started to smile too. But the next day the children’s father got injured and the children’s mother had to go away. To make him feel better they sent him pictures they had drawn of the swan, surprisingly enough this made him feel better and gradually he got closer to being able to come home. Later on that week a flock of swans flew by and the children knew that this meant they had to let their swan go. The children were very sad because everyone had left them but their grandma, but they had only just realized that while they were looking after the swan the time went very quick and before they knew it their dad would be back. Their dad did actually come back in just about a few days and once more they were happy again.
Anyone could read this book, but I think kids in grade 3-4.
I liked this book, my favourite part about it would have to be the illustrations. The author makes this book feel very warm.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid is a really good book. Greg is jealous of Rowley because he gets to go to concerts and hang out with a teenager named Brian. At the lock-in Rowley comes up with a better nickname than Greg. His nickname was respectful Rowley and Greg’s nickname was great Greg. His mum goes to school and his grandpa has to look after them. Greg finds a book called ‘Taking Care of Gregory & Rodwick A to Z’. Greg changes some of the rules and mum wants some help with the cleaning so she hires a maid. Greg wants the maid to do his laundry so he leaves her a note and makes the maid think it was his mother. Wow write the note!

Revolting Rhymes
Written by Roald Dahl
Revolting Rhymes is full of rhymes you know,
I bet you’re glad I told you so,
Cause today this book review will be,
A rhyme like this famous book you see.
So first, what is the book about?
It’s a horror that will make you shout.
It has Cinderella, The Three Pigs and Snow-White,
But by gosh are you in for a fright!
It’s not really sweet, kind, loving and gentle,
It’s actually rather really quite mental.
The stories are different, strange and scary,
The cover might as well say “Bloody Mary”
I’d recommend this book for the brave,
Possibly someone with a name like Dave.
Someone who can stand to hear,
Revolting Rhymes going through your ears.
And as for my opinion of this book,
I’ll say it’s worth another look,
Because it’s quite funny if you can get past,
The disgusting rhymes that always last.

“Trains” by Stephanie Turnbull
This is an interesting 47 page book about the first trains invented through to the modern trains of today. It has lots of knowledgeable facts, colorful pictures and diagrams. There is a contents page at the beginning of the book making it easy to go straight to a chapter without having to read the whole book.
It is suitable for anyone even if they aren’t interested in trains because there are so many different facts to read. The pictures are great and worth looking at even if you don’t read anything.
My opinion of this book is it is enjoyable as l learnt that trains can go under the sea and the longest cargo train had 660 wagons (trailers). So next time you are in the library and looking for an awesome book to borrow this is the one to get.
Ella Bella Ballerina and Cinderella
By James Mayhew
This book is about Cinderella and Ella Bella. It starts with Ella Bella forgetting her ballet shoe and Madame Rosa gives her a pair to borrow. All the children dance to the Cinderella music and when the lesson is over, Ella Bella opens the music box and keeps on dancing. Lots of fairies come including a fairy godmother and they all go to Cinderella’s house. Cinderella doesn’t think she can go to the ball but the fairies magic her a dress. Ella Bella gives her some shoes and they both go in a carriage to the ball and the Prince asks Cinderella “May I have this dance”. They dance and dance. The two ugly step sisters are not happy. Ella Bella pulls Cinderella away because it’s midnight and they hurry away but one of the slippers is left behind. The Prince says he’ll travel the world to find the girl who belongs to the shoe and Ella Bella says she knows who it belongs to and where she lives. Ella Bella takes the prince to Cinderella’s house. The ugly step sisters try on the shoe but it doesn’t fit. When it’s Cinderella’s turn, she tries on two of the slippers and they both dance. When the music stops, Ella Bella is on her own again and puts the pair of shoes away and Madame Rosa tells Ella Bella to try not to forget her ballet shoes again. Ella Bella goes home with her Mum.
This is a great book. I think it would be suitable for other 6 and 5 year old girls.

James and the Giant Peach
By Roald Dahl
James and the Giant Peach is basically about a young boy (James) who has a great life living close to the beach until his Mother and Father go into the city and are eaten by a runaway Rhino. James has to move to his Aunt Spiker and Aunt Sponge’s house. Aunt Spiker and Aunt Sponge are very bad aunties who don’t let him have any toys or friends to play with. He only really has a mattress on the floor with nothing else in his room. One night, when James gets a consequence and has to stay outside all night, he finds a hole in a giant peach. James goes through the hole and makes it right up to the pip in the middle. There is a big door in that pip so James opens it and when he looks inside there is a Centipede, an Old Green Grasshopper, Miss Spider, a Ladybird, an Earthworm, a Silk Worm and a Glow Worm. James is very frightened of them but all of the insects calm him down. After all the greetings, Old Green Grasshopper says it’s time to go to sleep. Then he says, “Miss Spider, could you please make our beds”. During the night the peach rolls down a big hill and goes right through the city and lands in the ocean. Here starts a big adventure for James and his new friends as they make their way to America.
This book is a really good book. I love the author and I would recommend this to children in Grade 2 – Grade 4.

“Stellaluna” By Janell Cannon
Review By Tarquinn – 3B
This book is about a baby fruit bat named Stellaluna. At first she is safe and sound with her mother until an owl spooks them and Stellaluna is accidentally dropped into a bird’s nest. Now lost, Stellaluna does her best to fit in with the other baby birds in the nest. But no matter how hard she tries, Stellaluna just can’t pretend to be a bird. She finds her way back to her mother and even shows her new bird friends how to be a fruit bat!
I think this book is suitable for 3 to 6 year olds. I think little kids would enjoy the story and the beautiful illustrations.
I liked this book because of the adventure Stellaluna goes on. This makes the story exciting and I wanted to know if she would find her mum. There really wasn’t anything in the book I didn’t like.
I would recommend this book for a bedtime story or for anyone who is interested in fruit bats.
I would like to say a BIG congratulations to all the students who took the time to read a book and write a review! They were all very well written and enjoyable to read, but unfortunately there can only be one winner from each year level.

Book: B.F.G / Big Friendly Giant
Author: Roald Dahl
I read this book all of the time because it is a book that is fun to read and on every page you just don’t know what is going to happen.
Every page is interesting. It is a book about a giant who looks frightening, but the giant is actually friendly. The giant wants a little girl to come to his cave so that the giant won’t be lonely.
I recommend this as a 5 star book for all ages. book review by Abbey W, Grade 4R
Spot’s Big Book of Words…
Eric Hill.
Spot has some wonderful adventures in this story with his good friends. Sally makes sandwiches, Tom and Helen help out on the farm, Helen and Betsy have a dance lesson and they all help in the garden.
This book has helped me learn lots of new words, for every picture on the page there is a word explaining what the picture is. I was able to help my mum read all of the book.
My family loves Spot, my favorite part of this book is when Spot and his friends go to the snow and make a snowman and snowdog that looks just like Spot.
I think everyone will enjoy this wonderful story, its always interesting to find out what Spot will get up to next…
Thanks for reading my book review…….
I’m so glad you enjoyed Spot’s Big Book of Words and even more proud that it has taught you lots of new words. Keep up the fantastic reading, many smiles Miss Vine
